Sometimes, a simple code review comment can ruin your mood. Not because it’s wrong, but because of how it feels.
The Situation
You happily submit a pull request.
Someone reviews your PR and leaves a few comments. Some of them may even be valid.
But for some reason — which I’m going to talk about in this post — it gets under your skin.
If you’ve ever felt this before, you’re not alone.
The Reaction
Even when the comment is technically correct, it can still feel annoying.
Sometimes, it starts to feel personal.
You feel like you’re being judged — not just your code.
To be honest, I’ve been in this situation many times.
It took me a while to realize that what bothered me wasn’t always the comment itself, but the way I interpreted it.
The Unfairness
What makes it worse is inconsistency.
You’ve seen the same patterns in other PRs pass without any comments.
But when it’s your code, suddenly it matters.
And that’s when the frustration starts.
Looking at It Differently
At some point, I started asking myself:
Is it really about the comment?
Or is it about how I’m interpreting it?
That question changed how I started looking at code reviews.
What I Realised
I realized a few things:
- Not every comment is personal, even if it feels like it
- Reviewers are not always consistent
- Something that matters to one person may not matter to another
- And sometimes, my ego gets involved more than I’d like to admit
How I Try to Deal With It
I still feel this sometimes.
But now, I try to pause before reacting.
I re-read the comment.
I ask myself whether I’m reacting to the feedback, or to the way it made me feel.
Sometimes the comment is valid.
Sometimes it’s poorly phrased.
Sometimes it’s inconsistent.
But reacting immediately usually makes it worse.
What helps me most is creating a little distance between myself and the code.
The code is mine.
But it is not me.
Final Thought
I don’t think this feeling ever goes away completely.
And maybe that’s fine.
Code reviews are not just about code.
They’re about communication, trust, and ego.
I still get annoyed sometimes.
I just understand it better now.
